I beg your patience in this matter, as I expect you have heard similar arguments. On your BTQ page you beg the substitution of "This begs for the question..." for what you call a common mistake. However, when you do that, you inadvertently imply that there is no error at all, if I may beg acceptance of my following axiom. I beg recognition that the direct object of the verb in question can be either the requested item or the petitioned party, making "for" an optional word in your alternative: -He begs the man. -He begs the man for a dime. -He begs a dime. -He begs a dime of the man.
